Wines of the San Juan

Wines of the San Juan Information

The Wines of the San Juan story began in 1961 at a roller skating rink in Phoenix, Arizona, where David Arnold first fell in love with Marcia Harris. Married in 1965, they would spend the next 33 years wrangling 5 children around the country while alternating smoke jumping, horse training, trout farming and raising dairy cows.

In 1999 they purchased a foreboding patch of desert ringed in rusty barbed wire along the San Juan River in Turley, New Mexico. With a dream of developing a family vineyard, they jumped headlong into winemaking with no prior experience, unperturbed by having to start over yet again. The humble cowboy farmer became a vintner, and with his family learned to grow grapes from the parched New Mexico soil beneath an unforgiving sun. Guided by a fierce entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to work closely with the land in synch with the seasons, the Arnolds built Wines of the San Juan from scratch, learning the intricate process of winemaking and vineyard management the hard way – through trial and error, grand mistakes and hard-won victories.

I remember when they first started out and I've been gone for a while and came back to visit my friend who lives down the street from them I was so impressed I bought several bottles like five for relatives is Christmas gifts. The wine is very good and they've done very well it is worth the trip of course even the scenery and the drive there is worth a good weekend getaway.

I called ahead to see if I could pay for a glass of wine for my parents' anniversary. Marcia picked up — was so kind and far exceeded my expectations! Everything was all set up for them, even a sweet little chalkboard welcome for them, plus a receipt was sent to my cell phone. It seems like a winery that is organized and really cares about its visitors. I know it helped my parents have a great 35th anniversary. Thank you Marcia!

Wines of the San Juan Scheduled Events:

Currently, all Four Corner States (Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona) have mandated shelter in place policies. This, in combination with rules limiting the number of people in public and private gatherings, makes it impossible for venues to host shows. Once the restrictions are lifted and bands start performing again, we’ll be listing all upcoming events here.
